Alohamundi

Managing holiday flats in Seville since 2016, for the owner and for the traveller.

AlohaMundi was founded in Seville in 2016 and manages holiday flats spread across the old town and Triana. It publishes the listings, adjusts the prices, cleans, repairs and answers guests at any hour. It has to win over two parties at once: the owner handing over the keys to their home and the traveller choosing where to sleep. Its red brand went back a long way and was no longer up to that role. From Hüan, our design branch, we redesigned it from top to bottom: a roof-shaped symbol, two reds with black and bone, the Bricolage Grotesque typeface and a brandbook with examples for web, social media and photography.

The brief

Alohamundi already had a red brand and a history behind it. It needed modernising without breaking with that past, and bringing up to the standard of today's market. The brief was a complete redesign: symbol, logotype, colour, typography and rules of application. We summed it up in a manifesto for welcoming design with three values: elegance, innovation and quality. To those we added three principles of use that guide every piece: easy, flexible and optimistic. Every decision that followed, from the symbol to the photography, is checked against that list. The brand has to serve the guest looking for somewhere to stay just as well as the owner entrusting their home.

Symbol and colour

The symbol is a roof, the promise of home: two angled strokes and a small square beneath. It works on its own, in white on a red square with rounded corners, for compact spaces. The logotype sets the name in lower case and comes in three versions: symbol above the name, horizontal and square. The palette starts from the original red and refines it into two tones: Pantone 187 garnet and Pantone 485 bright red. Alongside them, a warm black and an off-white that serves as a background and as the alternative to white when the mark is reversed out. Over five frames, the symbol folds into a shape that recalls a heart and turns.

Typography and system

We chose Bricolage Grotesque as the only family, in weights from ExtraLight to SemiBold, with bold to pick out phrases. It is a clean-stroked grotesque for headlines and running text. Main headings from 90 to 120 point in Regular, secondary headings from 50 to 80 in Light. Body text at 20 point with 30 point leading; headings scale in steps of ten. The signature keeps a clear space of 30 pixels and, over dark photography, goes in white. The photo drops to 80% opacity if it makes the mark hard to read. We finished with 40 line icons for the home and its services: bed, key, shower or fan.

In use

Each principle in the brandbook comes with an example piece. For easy, a mock-up of the website with a check-in, check-out and guests search box and photos of the homes. For flexible, a story and a post for social media, one in each red. For optimistic, a red-tinted portrait with the line Places to come, places to go back to. Two photos slip in between the words in rounded capsules, the Plaza de España among them. A freehand white line runs across several pieces and adds a human gesture to the geometric system. We delivered the complete manual with signature, palette, typography and icons.
