The hospitality school of the Cámara de Comercio de Sevilla.
Gastromiun is the Cámara de Comercio de Sevilla's International School of Hospitality, Gastronomy and Nutrition. It opened in April 2021, in the Pabellón de España at La Cartuja, to train the people who will be running the kitchens and dining rooms in the years ahead, and to restore prestige to a trade that struggles to find and keep professionals. It teaches three branches: sommelier studies and oenology, hospitality business management, and pastry and bakery, and it runs workshops for enthusiasts through the Gastromiun Club. Each branch has its own audience and needs to stand apart without ceasing to be the same school. At Hüan we proposed a prototype identity that brings them together under a single symbol, with a logo, a palette, typography and a brandbook with rules for applying it.
Each branch of the school needed to stand apart without breaking the master brand. The starting point was a manifesto for design that nourishes, with three ideas: precision, discovery and beauty. We assigned each one a shape: the straight line, the curve and the circle. From there came the three principles that govern the whole system: easy, flexible and optimistic. Easy because the language is simple and accessible. Flexible because it fits any medium or format. Optimistic because the brand celebrates the joy of working with food.
The logotype is a single continuous stroke, rather like a signature. The hollow at its centre draws a bowl, and a red dot floats above it. In the master brand the bowl is empty: it is the student's starting point. In each specialism it fills with something different. A red fill for sommelier studies, a teal circle for hospitality, an orange dome for pastry and an aquamarine stroke for the club. The logotype works horizontally, vertically and as a symbol on its own, with variants for light and dark backgrounds. It is also designed to be animated: the bowl fills up and serves to open or close digital pieces.
The palette has eight colours: teal, navy, purple, red, orange, peach, bottle green and aquamarine. Aquamarine underpins the master brand and the sommelier branch. Bottle green goes with hospitality, peach with pastry and purple with the club. Where the brand cannot be used in colour, the logotype switches to white or black on solid or photographic backgrounds. The typeface is Roobert, in Medium and Semibold, a geometric, monolinear sans that pairs with the stroke of the symbol. The g with its rounded lower corner is the distinguishing detail we were after for the brand's texts.
The brandbook sets concrete rules so that anyone can apply the brand without hesitation. The logotype keeps a twenty-pixel margin from any corner of the photo or artwork. The variants for each specialism always sit in a rounded pill, with an optional subtitle, so they read at small sizes. The hollows of the symbol become a graphic device: circles and cropped strokes that decorate backgrounds and cards. We tested it on a team module with portraits over three colours and on a club membership card. And on photography against a black background, where the logotype changes colour to suit the image.
